150 years since the first telephone call! Fascinating stories in an equally fascinating setting, featuring exhibits that have long surpassed a century of existence, all in the company of INRS-EMT Professor Serioja Ovidiu TATU, PhD (Eng.). He is one of the few restorers and collectors who owns pieces of history—many of them unique—restored by his own hand.

Imagine a world of silence. A world where, if you left home, the only way to send a thought to loved ones was a letter that spent weeks on the road, or a telegraph that turned emotions into cold dots and lines. Until one March day, a century and a half ago, when the silence was broken by a single sentence that would change the course of history. The story begins in 1876. This specific filing number was the one that revolutionized modern communication: U.S. Patent No. 174,465. Alexander Graham Bell uttered the phrase that marked a new era of communication. On March 10th, his assistant, Thomas Watson, heard through the device: “Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you!” It wasn't just a call for help; it was the moment physical distance began to die. The telephone was not just a machine; it was the first time we could feel someone's presence, even from miles away.

Today, when you touch your smartphone screen, you are wielding 150 years of genius. You hold a phone more powerful than Bell could have imagined and a radio receiver more advanced than Marconi ever dreamed. We are more connected than ever, yet the story remains the same: the human desire to be heard and to never be alone in the silence. We have evolved from underwater transoceanic copper cables to 5G, but the need remains unchanged: the longing to be heard. In another 150 years, others will likely look at today's phones the way we now look at Bell’s hand-cranked devices. But the voice... the voice will always remain the bridge between us.
